Cottingham Scouts are on the lookout for volunteers to support the next generation and give young people the opportunities they need to develop skills for life.

At Cottingham Scouts, we are do-ers, makers and give-it-a-go-ers. Yes, we go camping, hiking, swimming, climbing and kayaking. But we also get to hang out with our friends every week – having fun, playing games, working in a team and taking on new challenges.

We are made up of a Beaver colony (aged 6-8) who hop, skip and jump their way through lots of different games and activities; two Cub packs (aged 8-10½) who take part in lots of interesting and challenging activities; and a Scout (aged 10½-14) & Explorer (aged 14-18) unit who go on adventures and conquer the small task of changing the world.

We’re looking for more people to lend a hand and make this possible for even more young people in Cottingham. After over a year of being stuck in our homes, everyone wants to get out and about, meeting up with friends and experiencing the great outdoors. This has meant we’re seeing a growing waiting list for our Beaver section and more Cubs wanting to join too.

Scouts happens when a lot of us give a little. You’re not signing up for a lifelong commitment – just to help out, when and where you can. We’d love it to be once a week, but we work around your work and family life. Plus, volunteering’s not just about giving something back. It’s also about doing something that’s good for you.

Research shows that it improves your wellbeing and helps you build career-boosting skills. This is because you’ll be connecting with the community, meeting new people, learning skills for life that look great on a CV like leadership and teamworking, and most importantly having the chance to have fun.

Scouts is open to everyone, no matter your age, gender or beliefs. All you need is to be over 18 and allow us to complete a DBS check to ensure our young people remain safe.

You don’t need to be Bear Grylls to volunteer, you don’t even need to have been a Scout (or Guide). We’re just looking for passionate people that want to do something that good for young people, and good for you too, because lending a hand at Cottingham Scouts is a two-way street. So, whether you are an activity-planner or tidy-upper, a skill-sharer or sandwich-maker, we’ll give you the support and any training you need to shine.
